Now, a year after Disney fired Gunn over his social media activity, the studio has rehired him to make the third "Guardians" film, according to the Hollywood trades.

Gunn faced accusations of pedophilia after numerous tweets discussing the subject matter, which some interpreted as bad jokes. A major U.S. outlet exclusively announced that Disney has reinstated him and the director just posted a confirmation. Persuaded by a public apology by Gunn, Horn chose to take him back.

"Unlike the defensive posture exhibited by Kevin Hart that led him to skip hosting the Oscars, Gunn fell on his sword early and often and never lashed out at Disney", Deadline's Mike Fleming wrote. As reported, Marvel has agreed to start the production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after Gunn finishes Suicide Squad. Disney dropped him as the director of Guardians 3 last July after old, offensive tweets by the filmmaker were unearthed and publicized by conservative pundits. In the comic book movie world, this was felt most by Guardians of the Galaxy franchise writer/director James Gunn. The outrage, as it turned out, was prompted by a group of alt-right Twitter groups who apparently took exception to comments that James Gunn made about President Donald Trump. The July firing of James Gunn for old, offensive tweets had the studios scrapping those plans.

The cast was very supportive of their director with Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista all signing an open letter to get the director back. This comes via Deadline, which has confirmed it with Gunn and Marvel's camp. At the time, Gunn apologized and noted that he had apologized in the past.

Although Gunn apologized and issued a statement saying, "I understand and accept the business decisions taken", there was nearly immediately a backlash on the director's behalf, with supporters claiming that the studio had overreacted and moved too precipitously to sever ties.

The Guardians of the Galaxy series has grossed over $1.6bn (£1.2bn) worldwide, with the sequel surpassing the earnings seen by the first film. "I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be", Gunn tweeted.
