Huffman and Loughlin charges shatter actresses' clean images

This may or may not have involved the gaming of test scores, given that one of the key witnesses is said to be a director of college exam prep.

The payment to KWF, which was set up by accused scam ringleader William Singer, was allegedly made to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of their eldest daughter Sofia Grace Macy.

Prosecutors allegedly have a recorded phone call between Huffman and the cooperating witness planning for someone to take the test for the actress's daughter.

When it came to getting their younger daughter, Georgia Grace Macy, 16, into a good college, the pair once again allegedly turned to Singer's scam for help. Mr Giannuli was charged along with his wife, TMZ reported. He sat in the courtroom where Huffman had her first appearance and appeared to read legal documents during the proceedings.

The Justice Department has published the full list of those who have been indicted on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit racketeering to mail fraud and obstruction of justice.

A judge ruled that the Emmy-winning actress could be released on $250,000 bond. "But all Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are armed and may draw their weapons as a precautionary measured based on the circumstances during the execution of any warrant", she added. Huffman was then taken to a federal building and processed by federal marshals.

Ms Huffman and Ms Loughlin were due to appear in Federal Court in Los Angeles later on Tuesday, prosecutors said.

"Desperate Housewives" star Felicity Huffman and fellow Hollywood actress Lori Loughlin are among dozens indicted in a $25m scam to help their children cheat their way into top United States universities.

Loughlin's husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, is also charged.

Prosecutors say the coaches were bribed to indicate students were being considered as athletic recruits, because universities "typically apply different criteria when evaluating applications from students with demonstrated athletic abilities".

William Rick Singer, the founder of KWF, had been identified as the alleged mastermind behind the scandal. The other individual is Toby MacFarlane who lives in Del Mar.
