"Especially in a tournament like this, a tournament where I have had plenty of success in the past. but it happens, just one of those days". "Completely different conditions today: Ball bounces much higher".

"I lose to (Kohlschreiber) and get absolutely shredded "same old Kyrgios" how about the guy is just good?" I wasn't playing well. "You always need the No. 1 not to play his best to beat him".

Then it was Kohlschreiber's turn to show some nerves as a string of four errors, including a double fault, gave Djokovic a break back.

Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine came back from a break down in the third set to beat Australian Ashleigh Barty 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-4 to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals for the first time.

Shortly after falling to Kohlschreiber, Djokovic was headed out for doubles, teaming with Fognini for a 7-6 (8/6), 2-6, 10/6 victory over Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau to reach the semi-finals.

He made no mistake on his second chance, however, firing a sideline-skimming forehand to seal the milestone win on his first match point.

Kohlschreiber, who arrived at Indian Wells on a three-match losing streak, will face France's Gael Monfils for a place in the quarter-finals. Djokovic's chief rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer breezed into the Round of 16 with straight sets win.

Nadal, a three-time champion at Indian Wells, did not face a break point in the match.

Osaka lost to Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour in the fourth round of the first title defense of her career.

"I think I played a very solid match". I've got a lot of messages.

Nadal, a three-time victor of the Indian Wells title, next faces Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic, who ousted 14th-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-2.

"Things to work on, without a doubt", Djokovic said.

"I'm very confident with my game right now". Nadal eased by 25th-seeded Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-1, while Federer defeated Swiss countryman Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4.

The 22-year-old will next face Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who continued his run of dominant serving without being broken on his way to an impressive 6-4 6-2 win over 10th seeded Croat Marin Cilic.

Poland's 67th-ranked Hubert Herkacz upset sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of a Masters 1000 event for the first time.
