Android Q Beta to Be Available to More Smartphones, May Release Today

As Android Police reports, Iliyan Malchev from Google's Project Treble team revealed the move in a discussion on the Android Developers Backstage podcast.

We've been wondering when the beta for Android Q would land, given that past releases have all occurred at around this time of year. Google is expected to release the first Android Q developer preview this month, and showcase the Android Q Beta (developer preview 2) at Google I/O 2019 in May this year. That shows you the problems with fragmentation that Android still has.

Leaks have suggested we're going to see a system-wide dark mode, which does more than just darken the app drawer and quick settings tile.

If you have a phone such as a Pixel or a phone that received the Beta past year go and charge it and get ready to check out the beginnings of what to expect in Android Q.

Illiyan: Yeah, in fact it was fully due to Treble. The seven smartphones, which received the Android Pie Beta were Essential PH-1, Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, Sony Xperia XZ2, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S.

"At Google I/O [2018], when we did the first beta, we had all these companies lined up and that was really that wonderful", Malchev said.

With Android Q still officially under wraps, not many details are known for sure about what we can expect from it in terms of new features. "But the trend is positive and strong, and I am very happy about this", said Mr Illiyan Malchev, Android Developer at Google. If it's similar to Android Pie in release schedule, we might even seen the first developer previews landing very soon.

Something to look forward to: The future of Android is shaping up as Android Q nears developer preview status. Of course, we'll have to wait till May this year to definitively know the final list of smartphone makers on board with the Android Q beta programme.
