The 30th Anniversary softtop starts at $35,915, with the hardtop RF carrying a $2600 premium at $38,515.

Only 3,000 units will be made worldwide, with 500 already earmarked for the USA market.

Three decades after the 1989 Chicago Motor Show was the stage for the debut of the original MX-5, Mazda has today unveiled the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition at the 2019 Chicago Motor Show, which runs until 18 February.

Mazda originally planned to use the yellow color found on the original 1989 Miata but wanted to go further than simply reusing an old color.

Mazda took the wraps off the third-generation MX-5 in 2005, the NC. Later on, Mazda realised the Miata name still had brand resonance, so the company compromised and it became the MX-5 Miata in North America, a name it carries to this day.

Whether you like MX-5s or not, there can be no denying the impact it's had on the world of sports cars. GT models replace 16-inch.

Inside, the bespoke feel continues with orange accents on the seats, door trim, dashboard, steering wheel, air vents and gear lever, while Recaro seats and Alcantara trim on the door trim and instrument panel add a sense of exclusivity. All of the cars have the same features including dark gunmetal forged aluminum Rays wheels based on the design used by the Global MX-5 Cup racing cars.

The vehicle had some unique options and features that made it so attractive to buyers. Opting for the automatic transmission-why would you ever, though?-adds $499 to the softtop's price and $400 to the cost of the RF. Can't have any non-Anniversary Edition owners one-upping you on the equipment front now, can we? Mazda says the auto represents "30 years of endless gratitude" to the enthusiastic fans of the Miata and "commemorates all the milestones and important people" from the car's "special journey".
