Pelosi stops short of endorsing Green New Deal

The main goal of the Green New Deal is to remodel the US economy and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn't old enough to run for president.

The Green New Deal also aims to create an economic safety net for "frontline" communities that will be affected by the impacts of climate change and by a radical shift away from fossil fuel use.

"We welcome the enthusiasm that is there with the Green New Deal", Pelosi said Thursday at a news conference.

Pelosi's reluctance to offer a full-throated endorsement of the Green New Deal makes a certain amount of political sense; for every progressive congressperson like Ocasio-Cortez, there are also more moderate Democrats who need to hold their seats in districts that voted for President Donald Trump or, at the very least, could conceivably flip to Republican in the next election cycle. 'The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it right?' she said, mocking the democratic socialist's effort.

"It does, it does, yeah, I have no problem saying that", Ocasio-Cortez said.

The government can take an equity stake in Green New Deal projects "so the public gets a return on its investment", she added.

In the past decade, she has already seen Democrats try and fail to pass a sweeping cap-and-trade climate law.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped eight Democrats to serve on a special committee to address climate change.

Pelosi said Reps. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Joe Neguse of Colorado, Donald McEachin of Virginia and Sean Casten of IL will serve on the panel, along with three Californians: Julia Brownley, Jared Huffman and Mike Levin.

The resolution marks the first time Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers have attached legislative language onto the Green New Deal, a concept that until now has been largely undefined other than as a call for urgent action to head off catastrophic climate change and create jobs.

She and fellow Democrat, Rep. Ed Markey of MA, will introduce their proposal later Thursday.

The non-binding resolution outlines several goals for the United States, including meeting 100 percent of power demand from zero-emission energy sources.

"Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal represents an quake in the Democratic Party and American politics where a working class Latina bartender from the Bronx is now proposing and leading the most serious solution to rewrite America's social contract and stave off climate disaster".

Most of the Democratic presidential candidates, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York; Kamala Harris of California; Elizabeth Warren of MA; and Cory Booker of New Jersey have also broadly endorsed the idea behind the Green New Deal.
