Scholes, 44, who left his punditry role and signed an 18-month contract with Oldham on Monday was one of Mourinho's harshest critics during his tenure at Old Trafford.

Salford are vying for promotion, and if they are promoted to the Football League for the first time they could be in direct competition with Sky Bet League Two side Oldham next season. David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary, were also part of that group.

Scholes has never made any secret of his affinity for Oldham and that a role at Boundary Park would appeal to him.

"There's obviously been three or four times over the last six years where [managing Oldham] could have happened and I've not been quite ready, " Scholes said.

"I was a United fan as a young kid but my dad was an Oldham fan so it was a lot easier to go and watch Oldham".

If anyone wants to have a pop at me, I won't take any notice. "I'm like every other manager I want to try and change that and I hope I can do it".

Speaking about the appointment, Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football".

The law guiding the league says anyone with conflict of interest will not be allowed to take any role, and since the former midfielder keeps ten percent of shares at Salford, it became hard.

Scholes will be in the dugout for his first game in charge tomorrow night (Tuesday 12th February 2019) at home to Yeovil Town.

Scholes is a part-owner of Salford City and he was briefly caretaker manager of the club in 2015.

"Paul will have my backing 100 per cent and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club".

"It is great that Paul is back in football and everyone at the club wishes him all the best in his new venture into football management". However, following a meeting of the English Football League, the move has been given the go-ahead.
