Netflix For iOS Is Finally Getting The Smart Downloads Feature

Back in July of 2018, Netflix unveiled a 'smart downloads' feature for its Android and Windows 10 apps to help manage the downloaded episodes on your device.

Smart Downloads, as the name suggests, is a smarter version of the Downloads feature that lets you save Netflix content to your device's local storage for offline viewing. The feature works by automatically downloading the next episode of a show when the user has finished watching the previous one.

Put simply, if the user downloads the first three episodes of a new show, then watches the first downloaded episode, Smart Downloads will delete the watched content and download the fourth episode, even though the user has only started to watch the second. "Now, fans on the Netflix iOS app can get in on the fun and convenience of Smart Downloads, spending less time managing their downloads and more time watching".

While you don't need the internet to watch downloaded titles, you do need to be signed into your account. This feature obviously only applies to episodic shows, not movies.

This update comes after the feature was first rolled out to Netflix for Android in July a year ago.

The feature itself can be turned on and off as a user sees fit, so it's not always on by default. This way, Netflix automatically does all the work for your downloads so you can keep watching shows without having to worry about manually downloading them or deleting the episodes to make space for new ones.

"We're trying out a feature which gives Netflix members the ability to rewatch favorite scenes and memorable moments with the click of a button", the streaming firm said.
