Frank Lampard has played down speculation linking him with a return to Chelsea, insisting he is only focused on Derby County despite being viewed as a candidate to replace Maurizio Sarri. Sarri was confident the players were picking up his philosophy early in the season when they went on an 18-game unbeaten run, but in the space of 10 days they conceded four away to Bournemouth and then the embarrassing six against Premier League leaders City.

'It is certainly a club I respect and a manager that I respect so it wouldn't make me smile or anything different because my job is here. Taking nothing away from Man City though, this was their best work of the campaign and could be a vital moment in the title race. "In the 20 minutes after the first goal we made a lot of mistakes against the wrong opponents because they played some fantastic football".

The prolific Argentinian joined Alan Shearer on 11 Premier League trebles as the champions returned to their ruthless best in a one-sided encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

City boss Pep Guardiola empathises with his counterpart, pointing to his own occasional difficulties in implementing his ideas when he first arrived in the north-west three years ago. "To be honest, I don't know what to expect".

Chelsea were 4-0 down within the first 25 minutes of play in the blue half of Manchester as the defending champions returned to the summit of the league table powered by a Sergio Aguero hat-trick in a 6-0 win.

"My first year was hard too". But when Sterling was too quick for Cesar Azpilicueta and chopped down by the Spaniard inside the area, Aguero coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to move level with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the Premier League's top scorer on 17 for the season.

"It needs time. The main reason I came to Manchester City is because my bosses, chairman, especially Txiki".

"I try to keep those good memories, and special thanks to my team-mates for helping me, but what matters most is winning".

"After Newcastle we spoke to each other and put ourselves in front of a mirror, and accepted the reality".

It means we are ahead of Liverpool on goal difference although the Merseysiders do have a game in hand as the season heads towards a pulsating final stretch.
