The article points out the hip-hop community's lack of representation and acknowledgement in the major song and album categories throughout the years.

That being said, there will be a multitude of stars on the red carpet, so grab your popcorn (or wine, we're not here to judge) and get ready for a night filled with the biggest stars in music! The nominations are dominated by Drake and Kendrick Lamar, with eight and seven nods, respectively.

Carlile is the most nominated woman with six nominations, including bids for song and record of the year with "The Joke".

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards telecast will be available to stream live across digital platforms on CBS All Access, the network's streaming site.

"As you go on that red carpet, as you take the stage, as you are with your teams and you're dealing with that anxiety and that pressure and you're feeling like you're falling into competition with your fellow women and sisters, know that that's not what this is about". All three rappers are nominated for several of the evening's biggest awards, though it's unclear whether they'll even attend the show.

The Recording Academy has made an effort to diversify its membership amid complaints that the Grammys are not an even playing field for minority and women artists.

The lead up to this year's Grammys hasn't been completely smooth though. Despite being heavily advertised as part of the show, Grande is not performing nor even attending the Sunday ceremony, after she felt producers "insulted" her by asserting too much control over her song choices. "I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken", Grande wrote on Twitter. "I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more".

"It's about collaboration. It's about feeling supported".

Monae was also joined by songwriter Linda Perry, the first women nominated for non-classical producer of the year in 15 years and rapper-singer Tierra Whack, who scored a nomination for best music video for her "Mumbo Jumbo". Other artists announced to perform on the broadcast include Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Dan + Shay, Post Malone with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Shawn Mendes, Diana Ross, J Balvin, Arturo Sandoval, Young Thug, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves, H.E.R., Miley Cyrus, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Little Big Town and Ricky Martin. "Grammy voters are less concerned with commercial success and more concerned with the work as a whole", she said.

Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day will perform a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, who won 18 Grammy Awards throughout her career.
