On Saturday, AMC released the first photos from Season 5 of the Walking Dead spin-off series, featuring a fresh look at Dwight.

Back in November, AMC programming president David Madden told The Hollywood Reporter that he was hoping that Gurira could remain on the show as her star continued to rise since her role as General Okoye in Black Panther. It also gives Scott Gimple, the architect of The Walking Dead universe, another challenge: Finding a way to reunite Rick and Michonne without disturbing the television show.

Danai Gurira is bidding farewell to the AMC show, Variety reports.

The second half of season 9 of the zombie drama will begin airing on February 10.

But following the departure of Andrew Lincoln, who played the lead character Rick Grimes from the show's beginning, fans must be starting to wonder where the neighbourhood is gone.

"She has been very vocal about saying that she loves the show".

Michonne has always been my favorite character in the series, so it's tough to see her leave. We love Danai; we love that character.

Gurira, who made a huge impression past year playing Okoye in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, will be another major loss for the show, which remains one of the most-watched on cable despite the departures of Lincoln and other cast members. "The goal is to have Danai continue on whatever basis she can make work, given the other things that she has going on in her life".

What's more, she's set to return as Wakanda general Okoye in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame and is now in the process of adapting the novel Americanah - by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - into a TV miniseries.
