Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya is now the most important matchup on the card, and Silva was remarkably emotional at this week's weigh-in.

After three rounds of gripping action, Adesanya was unanimously declared the victor with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27, taking his career record to 16-0.

After the fight, Silva was heard saying to Adesanya: "I pass the baton onto you".

American Kevin Gastelum arrived at UFC 234 with the championship belt after the title holder, Australian Robert Whittaker, withdrew from their proposed fight.

Israel Adesanya said defeating Anderson Silva was beating his idol.

The second round saw the best out of Silva all fight as he started to open up with his combinations and he began finding a home for his right hand on Adesanya's jaw. When it ended, both moved to the center of the ring and went to their knees and bowed their heads in a show of respect.

Heading into the fight, Adesanya was an overwhelming favorite but he found out quickly in the opening round that the 43-year old Silva still had some fight left in him.

"Rob said he was a bit bloated and a little bit exhausted which is not uncommon when your are going through the process they are going through, reloading and putting some food back in your body", Day told AAP. "You only develop these methods through years of hard fought experience. Big respect always. It would be an honor". The expectation going into the fight was it should be relatively easy for someone like Adesanya to finish Silva, but that didn't happen. If I'm playing basketball, to play against Michael Jordan.

The bout was essentially a kickboxing match with four-ounce gloves. Silva winced during one of those thudding kicks, which let Adesanya know he was getting the job done. Silva waited patiently for opportunities to counter, but he wasn't able to return to his glory days when he won 16 bouts in a row and was unbeaten for almost a decade. Adesanya showed great respect for Silva's counters and never fully opened up. However, Whittaker was forced to withdraw as he underwent emergency surgery to fix a hernia injury and the fight was scrapped.

UFC has offered full refunds due to the cancellation of the bout. His team released a statement on how he fell ill during the pay-per-view card last night.
