A Wisconsin congressman is calling President Donald Trump "a moron" over a tweet that urged global warming to "come back fast" in the face of risky cold hitting the Midwest. "Please come back fast, we need you!", Trump tweeted. "People can't last outside even for minutes". Or, to use an analogy Trump might appreciate, weather is how much money you have in your pocket today, whereas climate is your net worth. "In coming days, expected to get even colder", Trump tweeted Monday evening.

Trump's tweets assume significance in light of his non-committal attitude when it comes to global warming.

But some scientists believe global warming may actually be responsible for the 35-degree drop in temperatures as a wave of polar air hits the Chicago area this week.

"This leads to more extreme weather both hot and COLD!" Amid freezing temperatures a year ago, Trump tweeted: "Brutal and Extended Cold Blast could shatter ALL RECORDS - Whatever happened to Global Warming?"

Key climate change report from Trump's own administration: "Increases in temperatures during the growing season in the Midwest are projected to be the largest contributing factor to declines in the productivity of US agriculture".

In December 2017, the president suggested that global warming doesn't exist - but, once again, thought it could help against the cold.

The Climate Reality Project, launched by former Vice President Al Gore, tweeted: "Yes, it's cold".

The fact we are seeing record cold does not contradict climate research.

United Nations' World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas warned in 2018 that temperatures are predicted to rise up to 9 degrees by the end of the century.
