Say hello to the new Lexus LC Convertible ... concept (for now)

Lexus has pulled the sheets off of a brand new concept: an LC Coupe minus the "Coupe" part. Lexus is speaking as though the LC Convertible isn't a done deal for production, but it only takes one look at the released images to realise the model is all but ready for the showroom. In fact, it's one of the better coupe-to-convertible progressions we've seen of late-though full praise for the look may need to be held until we've seen the auto with the top up. "It would engage the senses in a way that is unique and exciting every time you got behind the wheel", said the car's chief designer Tadao Mori.

Lexus is offering some strong hints the convertible could be geared for production. Inside, elegant white leather dramatically contrasts with yellow stitching and dark-colored trimmings. If we were told Lexus designed the convertible before the coupe, we'd believe them.

The interior picks up most of the design elements of the currrent Lexus LC coupe.

In addition, the Japanese say a potential production-ready version of this prototype would be "more than just a grand tourer" but also a performance vehicle - a trait best underlined by the short overhangs and 22-inch wheels. The droptop sits low to the ground on 22-inch wheels. The vogue is very much for lightweight fabric electric tops, but Lexus has history with retractable hard tops (remember the SC of the early 2000s?) and a "retractable top housed under the rear deck lid" is how Lexus describes the roofing arrangements of its latest convertible. Well, there are plenty of options, but it would seem more than likely Lexus would opt for its existing engine line-up in the LC Coupe.

We hope to find out more about future plans for the Lexus LC Convertible Concept at the NAIAS next week.
