Broncos choosing between Fangio, Munchak for HC job

Fangio spent the 2018 season as the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

Fangio, 60, is well-regarded in NFL circles and led a Bears defense that paced the league in takeaways (36), rushing yards allowed (80.0) and points per game (17.7) this season. Elway liked Joseph and met with him nearly daily to talk about the roster and where the team stood. The Broncos conducted a more expansive search than when they hired Kubiak and Vance Joseph, who appeared locks before the process began.

However, Elway kept hinting at the need for more leadership, hinting at a presence, of commanding a meeting room.

Broncos star linebacker Von Miller suggested last month that the Bears' defense could lead Chicago to the Super Bowl title much as Denver's defense had three years ago - even in an age of potent offenses capitalizing on ever friendlier rules to run up scores.

"The different voice, and we both chose to make the change", Elway said. There was not going to be a better time than now so when the offer presented itself, it made sense for Fangio to take it.

A familiar face to San Francisco 49ers fans is headed to Denver.

With Fangio in the fold, Gary Kubiak could serve as his offensive coordinator or as an assistant coach. That will be tough with a new mind in the building.

Fangio has never been a head coach at any level. Kubiak was Denver's head coach in 2015 and 2016, but his primary offensive philosophy over the last few years can be taken from his time with the Texans as their head coach from 2006 through 2013. "The guy knows the game in and out and he knows his players, and ultimately, he wants the best for us out there on the field, so he puts us in positions to make plays". "If he wants to be a head coach one day, I want him to take a job and be a head coach".

Fangio became a popular head coaching candidate after consistently fielding stellar defenses over the greater part of the past decade.
