However, Manchester United fans are still clamouring for some exciting new signings this January to reinvigorate the squad even more, and a particular area of attention is the defence.

Pavard played a key role in France's World Cup win at Russian Federation 2018 and reports of a move to Bayern have persisted since, although both parties have previously denied any agreement.

The defender, who can play at centre-back as well as right-back, moved to the Bundesliga from Lille in 2016 and soon established himself as a star man for Stuttgart, starting all 34 league games last season. He played the full 90 minutes in all but one game of France's campaign in Russian Federation.

Bayern Munich have confirmed that France's World Cup-winning defender Benjamin Pavard will join them in July 2019.

"We're delighted and proud to be able to secure the services of a player like him", said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. "He is a very interesting player whom we really want to sign". He can dribble well and has a drive towards goal.

Bayern are now second in the Bundesliga table and face a fight to retain their title.

Niko Kovac's side trail Dortmund by six points in the table - the first time in eight seasons that they have not led the way going into the winter break.
