Murray and Tagovailoa - who will meet in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl on December 31 - have always been the favorites to win the award, with both posting the highest QBRs in the FBS entering bowl season since ESPN began tracking the statistic in 2004 with 96.0 and 94.2 respectively. The Oklahoma quarterback topped Tagovailoa for the Davey O'Brien Award given to the nation's top quarterback.

AP player of the year Kyler Murray adds the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback as ESPN's College Football Awards show in Atlanta began. Although he's a long-shot to win the award, Haskins deserves to be mentioned among the college football elite after a tremendous season.

On Friday, Murray will head to New York City for Heisman Trophy weekend.

Haskins, a third-year sophomore, stepped in after the departure of a four-year starter and smashed Ohio State and Big Ten passing records.

Murray is having a historic season.

Winning both the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards is an encouraging sign for Tagovailoa. His 4,527 yards of total offense are more than 68 of the country's other 129 teams, including six squads that are ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll.

Tagovailoa picked up where he left off in the second half of last season's national championship game victory against Georgia to lead the top-ranked Crimson Tide back to the playoff.

In a normal year, he'd be a shoo-in for the award. He's also rushed for 892 yards and 11 scores.

Murray is the first FBS player to enter bowl season averaging at least 300.0 passing yards (311.8) and at least 60.0 rushing yards (68.6) per game.

Kyler Murray's football career should be winding down over the next month as the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback is expected to join the Oakland Athletics in spring training in 2019. "All the hard work with my teammates has really paid off".
