Man tries to save a dummy hanging off a roof not realizing that it's a decoration inspired by the classic scene in 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'.

The Heerlein family's Christmas decorations took a page from the movie "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation", in which one character, Clark Griswold, clings to the gutter of the second story of his home after slipping on the roof while putting up lights.

'I was trying to get him down any way I can, ' Alfred said.

The Heerlein family in Austin, Texas, chose to recreate the decoration scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, complete with a hanging Clark Griswold. He even tried to climb the ladder set under the dummy, just as the scene in the movie, to reach it.

The family said they put the display up for a contest.

Ms Wheless said: "He was doing everything he could to get the ladder!"

An Austin police officer showed up after the 9-1-1 call and spoke to the nanny who was home at the time. "And be like 'Save Clark!'" Heerlein's sister-in-law, Leah Wheless, told KVUE.

The man made a call to 911 when the dummy didn't respond.

Following the incident, the family felt so bad about Alfred's reaction.

The Heerlein family has thanked the passer-by for trying to save the hanging "man" with a $500 gift card.

Clark W. Griswold never won any awards for his epic display of Christmas lights, which is a shame, because he really went all out while dealing with the stress of waiting for a Christmas bonus.

"She was scared that something like this was going to happen and I said, 'No one will think this is real, '" Chris told Inside Edition.
