A six-week absence would keep Gomez out until mid-January, with Liverpool facing nine games between now and then in three different competitions.

But the German hit back in his press conference today: "Daniel Sturridge is no cheat".

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended Daniel Sturridge. I think what Sean tried to do there is to bring up another subject so somebody could speak about that. We all have our own interests and aims.

"I said after the first challenge, I don't know who did it, sliding tackle from six or seven yards, getting the ball, everybody likes it, I said to the ref "it's no foul but please tell them you can not do that".

The 21-year-old suffered a fracture to his left leg in Wednesday's victory against Burnley at Turf Moor, with the club confirming he was sidelined for six weeks.

Speaking in the video on Liverpool's Twitter account, Gomez said: 'Hi everyone, it's Joe, I just wanted to say thank you to you all for your kind messages and well wishes.

"For us he was in outstanding shape and he helped us a lot, especially because we could make these changes with Trent and Joe".

"He plays at centre-half, he was out of position on the right, I've seen him play there before and I don't think it's his position".

He acknowledged Gomez's progress this season: "Together with Virgil, he improved so much ... it is a bit lucky because it could have been worse".

And former Liverpool FC striker Owen is backing the Reds to ease to a comfortable win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Andy Robertson is fit having missed the Burnley win through injury but Sadio Mané is likely to miss out again with a cut foot.
