The hope was that the freewheeling style Hoiberg used with the Cyclones would work in the National Basketball Association and that he would fare better than another former Iowa State coach, Tim Floyd, who went 49-190 in three-plus seasons with the Bulls.

"For us to sit here and think that just because we're getting guys back, I think that would mask the problems that we've seen", Paxson said.

But as the Bulls get ready to start December, they've decided to make a coaching change. "We gave Fred an opportunity".

Following the exodus of former Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau, the front office pairing of John Paxson and Gar Forman made a decision to go with a more modern approach to their next hiring. And he did a lot of good things for us.

In his three seasons with the Bulls, they have missed the playoffs twice and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

The following season, management added Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade in free agency. He finishes his tenure in Chicago, where he played for four seasons and had a long history with general manager Gar Forman, with a record of 115-155 (.426) and a single playoff appearance, when the Bulls were ousted in the first round by Boston in 2017. Hoiberg also adroitly managed the preseason altercation when Bobby Portis drew an eight-game suspension for punching Nikola Mirotic and breaking two bones in Mirotic's face.

The Sun-Times has learned that Hoiberg was caught off guard. This news comes with a rather pricey caveat, however, as Hoiberg's $25 million contract is still fully guaranteed. Boylen is "well regarded by management and ownership and has a chance to win the job permanently", the Chicago Tribune said. Paxson and Forman have hired Bill Cartwright, Scott Skiles, Vinny Del Negro, Tom Thibodeau and Hoiberg. Boylan and Boylen once worked together at Michigan State.
