Browns Working On Hiring Mike McCarthy As Next Head Coach

The inevitable happened on Sunday, as Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was sacked by the team. Despite the fact that the 2018 Packers haven't been very good, they had no business losing to the Arizona Cardinals, led by rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, at Lambeau Field in snowy temperatures.

The Packers (4-7-1) now might have to start that same rebuilding process, and given their uninspired performance with the season on the line, that might include major organizational changes. It was Green Bay's longest punt return of the year and helped set up the Packers' first scoring drive of the afternoon. "As a result, I made the hard decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately", Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy said in the statement.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was named the Packers interim head coach. Even Rodgers fighting through a knee injury he suffered in the opener was nowhere close to excusing their level of play this season.

The Packers were hosting the Cardinals in Green Bay. As I've written numerous times, McCarthy's tenure in Green Bay was more successful in aggregate than he is generally given credit for, and Aaron Rodgers has certainly not been blameless in the slide. The same issues kept popping up for the offence, most glaringly, empty third downs and a lack of explosive plays.

Despite much success during the McCarthy era, Green Bay fans have grown increasingly frustrated with him over the last few seasons.

"Yeah, a lot probably". McCarthy has obvious ties to the Cleveland front office, most-notably general manager John Dorsey, vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith and assistant general manager Eliot Wolf. "We all take part in the disappointments and the failures that we've had this season". It's not like we're getting blown out in a bunch of games. "But we missed a number of opportunities throughout the game".

"This was a game that we have won in the past, expected to win", said Rodgers, who threw for 233 yards on 31 completions. "We haven't played very well".
