Apple might finally release a new version of its AirPods in the first quarter next year. Its hinge will also be reportedly redesigned to support changes in internal design, and to withstand higher thermal requirements.

Apple launching AirPods in 2020 as well Kuo adds that in addition to the upgraded 2019 AirPods, there's a new version coming in 2020 as well. The updates are predicted to drive strong sales growth for the product.

The first, due to emerge in early 2019, sounds pretty basic: it's going to introduce the long-awaited wireless charging element, bringing the AirPods in line with recent iPhones and the Apple Watch in phasing out wires. The earbuds are also expected to get an upgrade to Bluetooth 5.0 and a W-series chip. There's also a possibility the upgraded AirPods might be water resistant and will feature noise cancellation. Kuo further states that the AirPods will see a major design overhaul and will be launched with an "all-new design". Apple hasn't said anything publicly about AirPod updates in a long time, although it did mention a wireless charging case for its earbuds on stage at a previous event.

The AirPods update was expected when Apple launched its 2018 iPhone lineup, but it was not to be.

Kuo claims AirPods are Apple's most popular accessory ever, and predicts the iPhone manufacturer will go from selling 16 million in 2017, to more than 100 million by 2021.

The last thing that the analyst mentioned in his report is that Apple is now on track to release another pair of AirPods in early 2020 that will have an "all-new design". He estimates that shipments of the device will hit 100 million units by 2021, up from 16 million a year ago. Kuo, however, has not confirmed what exactly "wireless charging support" means in its note obtained by Apple Insider.
