What We Know About The Thousand Oaks Shooting Suspect

Officers were called to Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, near Los Angeles, at around 11.20pm local time.

The officer who was killed in Thousand Oaks told his wife he loved her before running in to confront the gunman at the Borderline Bar and Grill Wednesday night. Helus died early Thursday at a hospital.

Whittler said the gunman first shot the security guard of the bar, she then saw two more people drop before she jumped to the floor.

"He went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said of Helus, his voice breaking. "We don't know where the other ones are, we don't know if they're OK or not".

The police officer was injured when he arrived at the scene with colleagues and "attempted to neutralize the threat", Ventura County Sheriff's Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian said.

President Donald Trump, who has resisted a surge in calls for tougher gun controls since 17 students were shot dead at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida earlier this year, said on Twitter that he had been "fully briefed on the bad shooting in California". Dean said it's not clear if Long did reload during the shooting, or how many times.

It is believed that Long killed himself at the bar, Dean said.

Hours before the shooting, he shared a flier advertising the college country night on his Instagram page, writing: "See y'all tonight!"

When the shots started, some people smashed windows with chairs to escape, witnesses told CNN.

Helus was one of the first on the scene and was struck multiple times when he went through the front door, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Geoff Dean, who is set to retire on Friday, said Long may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was known to law enforcement officials due to several unspecified "contacts" stretching back multiple years.

One survivor, Matthew Estron, told NBC Los Angeles that the shooter was tall dressed "all in black" and armed with a handgun and some kind of smoke grenades.

Madeleine Carr, the paper's editor, told CNN on Thursday morning that she was also waiting to hear back from some friends who had gone to the bar to attend College Country night.

Dean said that officials found a Glock.45-caliber handgun at the scene that was purchased legally.

"We're still looking for the shooter", Kuredjian said.

"I was actually about to leave when you start hearing pop, pop, pop".

But most agree that there was a shooting and many people fled the bar and grill.

He described the attacker as a bearded man in a black jacket and hat.

"(He) said to her, "Hey I got to go handle a call.

There was no screaming, she said - just gunfire and stampeding crowds.
