Wayne Rooney to make sensational England return against USA

Wayne Rooney is set to come out of worldwide retirement for England's friendly against the United States later this month to mark his contribution to the national team.

Press Association Sport understands that Rooney, England and Manchester United's record goalscorer, will make a one-off appearance for Gareth Southgate's Three Lions on 15 November.

The 33-year-old said he is "truly humbled and hugely excited" to be making his way back into the fold for the November friendly, having last played for the Three Lions in November 2016.

The worldwide friendly, set to take place on November 15, has been dubbed The Wayne Rooney Foundation global and some of the proceeds from the game will go towards the Manchester United great's charity.

The friendly game against the United States on 15 November will give Rooney the chance to win his 120th cap and will also raise funds for the Wayne Rooney Foundation. Rooney, who will be making his 120th appearance for his country, called time on his England career just as new manager Gareth Southgate was putting his faith in younger player towards the start of his tenure. "It's fitting that the match will be against the U.S. and I hope that both sets of fans enjoy the game".

Although Harry Kane is the current England captain, he will give the armband over to Rooney for the special occasion. Yet the move still risks accusations of the FA devaluing the fixture, which comes three days before England's potentially decisive Nations League tie with Croatia at the same venue.

Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew.

"For me the power of Wayne Rooney is his mentality and strength", he said.

"We all look forward to the occasion and lending support to a number of good causes through the Wayne Rooney Foundation".
