It looks like the Royal Family will be adding a seat to their Christmas table this holiday season. "Unlike Kate who has the support of his family, the Queen acknowledges that Meghan has no other relatives in this country", explains a source to the media.

Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, memorably broke protocol previous year by inviting Meghan as the first fiancée to attend Christmas with the royal family before her wedding to Harry in May.

This year's Christmas celebration at Sandringham is expected to be particularly joyful for the royal family, which has celebrated a royal baby, royal baby announcement, royal wedding and Prince Charles's 70th birthday all within the last 12 months.

Meghan Markle's mother Doria Ragland made a big splash at the royal wedding. Then, all summer long, the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex was embroiled in a very public feud with her estranged father, Thomas Markle, and her step-sister Samantha who seemed to take interview after interview to publicly disparage the actress with name-calling and rude comments.

And she also told the couple she wanted to spend the holidays with them too.

After Meghan married Prince Harry there was a backlash from her family although Doria did attend the wedding without any fuss.

The Queen's invitation would show respect and also acknowledge that Meghan, unlike Kate, has no other family in Britain, the source said.

In previous years the Middletons in fact have managed to join the Royals for church in the morning, but they were always based at Kate and William's Anmer Hall home rather than on the royal estate, and certainly wouldn't be given any turkey by her maj. Why, you ask? Here are 12 more times the royal family has broken their own protocol.
