Terrifying moment police shoot knife-wielding man on Bourke Street

Chilling footage uploaded to social media shows a man attacking police with a knife moments after the vehicle exploded.

Two other people have been injured amid reports of a shooting and stabbing in Bourke Street this afternoon.

"The cops were trying to hit him with batons and he wasn't going down", he said. A Reuters witness said that the city centre was closed off by police and that dozens of officers were patrolling. Some witnesses said the auto exploded before the man began stabbing people. He confirms that the offender has been shot and is under police guard.

"A man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard in a critical condition", it said.

"At the same time, passers-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed".

Police shot the man in the chest after he charged at them with the knife. "There is no known link to terrorism at this time".

"The investigation is ongoing and we are keeping an open mind", he says.

Victoria Police said one person died at the scene and two people have been taken to hospital.

'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

One of the injured people has a neck injury and is in a suspected critical condition, while another has a head injury, according to Ambulance Victoria. "They are in a suspected critical condition", they said. Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"And then I heard one loud bang". They said they heard screams and cries from the crowd before they were rushed from the area.

While the vehicle was quickly extinguished, reports soon followed of a man wielding a knife on Bourke Street.

Panicked pedestrians ran in all directions away from the scene, some hiding in nearby cafes and shops, locking themselves in back rooms.

"I've never seen a fire that big before".

More than 100 police have swarmed on the area.

Markel Villasin, 22, was finishing his shift at KFC on Bourke St as the drama unfolded.

The apparent attack came as a 28-year-old James Gargasoulas underwent trial in Melbourne for driving into a crowd in the same area in 2017, killing six people.
