A sheriff's captain says eleven people were shot late Wednesday when a suspect opened fire in a crowded Southern California bar. "You're always overanalyzing people, trying to figure out if something were to go down, 'What would I do?"'

Helus and a highway patrol officer exchanged gunfire with Long, he said, and the sergeant was shot "several times". The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"It's hard, because I've been doing this for 41 years, and you don't leave things unfinished", Dean, who'd been considering retirement, told ABC News' David Muir. He died at a hospital after being shot numerous times.

Dean estimated 10 to 15 people went to the area hospitals for what he expects are minor injuries.

"They called out our crisis intervention team, our mental health specialists who met with him, talked to him, and cleared him".

Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus was talking to his wife when calls started coming in about a shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill. He said they seemed to know what to do. Many of those present were young people, on hand for "college night".

- After the Wednesday night shooting, authorities recovered a handgun inside the Borderline Bar & Grill, a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun, which they believe Long used in the attack.

The Borderline, which has a large dance hall along with several smaller areas for eating and drinking, was holding one of its regular "College Country Nights". The bodies of the other victims killed were found at the scene.

According to public records, Long appeared to be the grandson of H. Daryl Foley, a former US Navy commander who spent 30 years in the service and died in 2010, according to a published obituary. "We all try to make sense of the senseless". Don MacLeod said he did not call police but avoided speaking with Ian Long.

California Lutheran University, which just the day before canceled classes because many of its students frequented the Borderline bar, announced that although the school had not been ordered to evacuate, it would close Friday and was "monitoring the situation closely". Then he said he saw the gunman, wearing a small black head covering and black hoodie. People out there didn't really know what was going on. "There was an exit right next to me, so I went through that".

Several of the survivors said they were also at the outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas past year when a gunman in a high-rise hotel killed 58 people.

His classmate says Long suffered serious PTSD after his tour and tried to get help from therapists and doctors.

"It looked like he knew what he was doing", Whitler told KABC-TV.

"And then after we had gotten everyone, the few boys that were shuffling people through, we basically jumped out the window and then just pushed everyone down the side along the fence towards the parking lot".

Knapp said he has friends who haven't been accounted for.

Helus served in recent years as a firearms instructor for recruits in the sheriff's academy, and also owned and operated a business in which he taught gun safety to permit applicants, according to CNN. Firefighters, police and school children saluted the caravan as it passed by.

Helus was a 29-year veteran looking forward to retirement in the next year or two, and leaves behind an adult son in addition to his wife, grieving colleagues said.
