The ad, entitled The Boy and the Piano, tells the story of how the 71-year-old music legend's life changed forever when he was gifted the musical instrument as a youngster, and it features the star singing his hit Your Song.

The almost two-and-a-half minute ad tells the story of Elton's first piano and how it was "more than just a gift" and helped him become the musical icon he is today.

John Lewis, who have a site on Futura Park in Ipswich, said that the scene was "inspired by real events" but involving "some creativity".

"The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family", John said in a statement.

Some even claimed the advert was a thinly veiled promotion for upcoming biopic Rocketman, featuring Taron Egerton as Sir Elton.

Elton John is clearly an expert in standing ovations and screaming crowds - but his popstar status isn't actually the main focus here.

"The ad is absolutely fantastic and I've truly loved every minute of being a part of it".

It added that Sir Elton had requested that a portion of his fee be donated to the Elton John Charitable Trust when he was first approached to be involved.

The advert will first air on TV tonight at 9.15pm during Dark Heart on ITV, but keen-eared Coronation St and This Morning viewers may have noticed the themes were played exclusively on piano on Wednesday to tease the advert.

The John Lewis advert launched this morning but has been teased throughout the week, and you probably didn't have a clue.

John Lewis has become synonymous with Christmas adverts, guaranteed to have us balling into a tin of Roses before breakfast or when we catch the ad between soaps. Fans will have to settle for his vintage tour t-shirts.
