In Florida, Democrat Andrew Gillum lost his attempt to become the state's first black governor, suffering a narrow defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis in a racially charged contest that drew national attention.

The Associated Press called the victory for DeSantis at 11:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

DeSantis, justifiably, thumped his chest in victory.

In the end, Trump's candidate won. Bill Nelson is trailing Republican Gov. Rick Scott by 38,000 votes, and there may have to be a recount.

I'm going to start a new thread for the Florida Senate race, and throw in the gubernatorial contest too. DeSantis, 40, was considered an underdog... Trump visited Florida and held a rally with DeSantis on October 31.

Adding weight to his environmental policy platform was support from The Everglades Trust.

Despite the edge from Democrats in 2016, President Donald Trump won Florida due to a surge of GOP voters on Election Day. He also reminded voters that the next governor will appoint three justices.

Accordingly, Trump and race occupied the mind of almost every voter.

DeSantis addressed his supporters at a watch party in Orlando on Tuesday after winning the election.

Identity politics factored into this campaign in a way few expected before the August primary. Nonetheless, it still wasn't enough for Gillum to win the state.

He enjoyed support from President Trump throughout his campaign.

"I can guarantee you this: I'm not going anywhere", Gillum said. The Mayor had vehemently denied being a "target".

It's worth noting that since Hume made his remarks, DeSantis has gained a slight lead over Gillum. Gillum has never been named as a subject of the investigation.

The trips and the ticket are part of an ethics investigation into Gillum, and Corey is at the heart of a federal probe into Tallahassee city government. "At least in this election".

GILLUM CONCEDES: The Dems blew this race when they nominated a scandal-plagued candidate this radical. The gubernatorial finalists in 2018 weren't supposed to be there in the first place. Results showed him trailing by roughly two percentage, or about 3,300 votes.

Mechanical engineer Christopher Phelps, 30, said: "In order for Trump to lose in 2020, we needed pretty much for them (Nelson and Gillum) to both win".

"This guy being in the Oval Office motivated me to come out and vote", Jeffrey Pinder said after voting at Edison Towers at NW Seventh Avenue and 58th Street.
