The California Republican, an ally of President Donald Trump, fended off a challenge from conservative Rep. Jim Jordan of OH in a closed-door election.

House Democrats, who hold the majority following this year's midterm elections, will select their leadership at the end of the month.

House Democrats will hold their election after Thanksgiving. Rice said she feels the same way about Hoyer and Clyburn.

A Washington Post report said McCarthy beat Jordan with the backing of retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan and benefits from a close relationship with President Donald Trump. She argued that Orange County residents had already been hit hard by the federal tax law and that infrastructure funds could be secured through other means. That would be enough to sink her bid in the January 3 floor vote.

Porter also bucked the California Democratic Party by declaring her intention to vote for a ballot initiative repealing a modest gas tax levied by the Democratic-run state government to fund infrastructure improvements. In the House, Jordan and McCarthy shook hands after a testy two days of closed-door sessions, according to lawmakers in the room for Wednesday's voting.

Kim, who had led the race since election night, would be the first Korean-American woman sent to the House, if elected.

But McCarthy added, "We took a beating inside the suburban areas".

Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas said Republicans exceeded expectations by limiting their losses.

"My job is to win that majority back, and I'm focused on that", he said. I think very highly of him. "I think you have to advance ideas that are better than theirs, and some of the ideas I've heard out of them, that is a low bar".
