United now face away games against Juventus in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League and if they repeat this lacklustre performance, they are unlikely to escape with anything less than two heavy defeats.

Smalling described it as a pivotal period for United and insists the value of victory in upcoming matches is priceless.

"We know we are going into a very tough week now but we can come out with some results it can be seen as a good month especially as it's a tough month now", Smalling said.

"We have fantastic character and the heart that any result, the game is not over and we go until the end". The point-blank saves against Callum Wilson and David Brooks in the first and second half respectively were the best that come to mind. I said it is impossible to play worse than we did so the second half will be better for sure.

Pogba returned to Old Trafford under the watch of their present manager in an £89 million in 2016 but the Premier League side refused to let their star man leave.

But while he admitted that task remains a work in progress, he believes United are showing the powers of recovery required to overcome setbacks and turn games around.

Asked about his team talk at half-time, Mourinho continued: "I started off positive".

"All credit to them for sticking in the game during that first period because it couldn't have been easy with the way we played and how hard it was to defend our attacking players". We trained with our kids too, mixed with us on one of the days, which is an incredible feeling for them.

"I really can't understand the kind of mentality that brings me more white hair".

Massimiliano Allegri replaced Costa with Cuadrado for the second half and Juve found it tough to create more chances, but Cuadrado finally added to their tally three minutes from time to stave off a potentially tense finale. "We're going to win a lot of points that way, and a lot of other teams are going to gain or lose points that way".

"We must do better defensively in our own half". Mourinho's side are now seventh in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and nine points behind leaders Manchester City.

"But then we managed to score in [stoppage] time and we got the points we lost against Chelsea".

"To be able to be a club like this and last as long as I have you need to have that courage and belief in your ability", Smalling said.
