John Lewis Christmas ad: Can Elton scoop the Christmas Number 1?

Scenes have been recreated to show some of Elton's "most pivotal" moments over the past 70 years, including performing at his school recital in the 1950s and his West Coast stadium tour in the 1970s, as well as backstage moments and song recordings.

From the present moment in time, a journey backwards through Elton's defining career moments takes us all the way back to him receiving his grandmother's piano as a 4-year-old boy.

The first three quarters of the ad are pretty baffling, as you wonder why Elton John's life story has anything whatsoever to do with Christmas, and whether the whole thing is just a cynical ploy to get everyone hyped for his upcoming film, Rocketman.

The switch might be a reference to the supposed role for Elton John in the retailer's forthcoming Christmas ad.

This year's ad is titled, "The Boy and the Piano" and is set to the soundtrack of Elton's first big hit, Your Song.

"To date it has proven to be one of the most effective marketing campaigns in the industry, delivering an excellent return on investment".

As he plays it for the first time, the slogan appears: "Some gifts are more than just a gift". They've produced some truly heartwarming adverts over the years, check out some of the best John Lewis Christmas adverts.

Taking to Twitter one fan moaned: "Elton John left the John Lewis meeting having secured a huge fee plus promo for his world tour and upcoming biopic".

After much anticipation, the 2018 John Lewis Christmas advert is here and it's going to give you ALL THE FEELS. "I hope audiences will watch this and really enjoy the national treasure that is Elton John". John Lewis is understood to usually spend around £7m on its Christmas campaign, including creative and media.
