More than 307,000 Louisiana residents have voted in advance of next week's election, exceeding the state's early voting turnout for all but presidential election years.

Almost 1.29 million GOP voters have cast ballots, compared to almost 1.23 million Democrats.

With one of the most crucial midterm elections in recent USA history less than a week away, early voter turnout appears to have almost doubled from 2014, shattering records along the way. Harris County includes Houston.

Early voting ran from October 22 to November 2.

The turnout is so unprecedented that researchers are now viewing the election in the same lens as a general election, which tends to draw more voters to the polls.

Data compiled by the Associated Press show turnout for mail and in-person voting has so far exceeded 2014 levels in about 20 states, including Wisconsin, Indiana, Florida, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

"This is the first time we're going to have a presidential-type vote, where you're going to see the majority of voters casting their ballots early", said Hector de Leon, spokesman for the clerk's office.

Statewide, more than 4.3 million Texans, almost 36 percent of registered voters, cast ballots in the 30 most populated counties through Thursday, according to the most recent data provided by the Texas Secretary of State's office.
