Ron DeSantis will be the next Florida governor, extending Republican control of the state's highest office to a sixth straight four-year term and proving that a candidacy nearly entirely about President Donald Trump can win the top office in a major state.

'We'll worry about history later, but today, we're working to win, ' said, who would become the first black governor of a state that has seen racial strife should he win.

In another closely watched statewide race, Democrat Bill Nelson and Republican Rick Scott were separated by less than 60,000 votes out of a total of more than 8 million as of 1:15 a.m.in their Senate race.

Heather Miller, of Fort Lauderdale, doesn't remember seeing the U.S. Senate and a U.S. House race on her vote-by-mail ballot.

Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is all in for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum receiving the last-minute support needed to help him become Florida governor. Neither Georgia nor Florida has elected a Democratic governor in 20 years.

But Republican Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in OH, one of the highest-profile governor's races, according to an NBC News projection. Gillum, a liberal Democrat, and DeSantis, who has tried to imitate Trump in every way, provided voters with a pretty intense contrast.

Republican former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey voted early Tuesday morning in Ponte Vedra Beach. Hill, who owns a home in Florida and is registered to vote there, flew back to the state from California on October 21 in order to vote for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in the 2018 midterm elections, as she revealed on social media.

Ron DeSantis won the Florida governor's race on Tuesday, bolstered by the strong support of fellow Republican President Donald Trump.

But the Democrats were trailing in redder areas of the state.

"We recognize that, you know, we didn't win it tonight". But Republicans, including Trump, made an effort to tie Gillum and his record to the federal investigation.

The gubernatorial race was a study in contrasts: a straight-talking, unapologetically progressive, black nominee running against a Tea Party figure who released a campaign ad in which his young children built Trump's fabled border wall out of toy bricks.

Florida is the most populous of the battleground states that swing between the parties in presidential elections, but Republicans have controlled the governor's mansion for two decades. "They've done that", University of Florida political science professor Daniel Smith said in an interview Wednesday. Despite implications that DeSantis was racially insensitive - an idea he angrily disputed during a debate - he was able to win the state that Trump carried in 2016. The presence of a third-party candidate on the ballot makes that possibility more likely. With 99% reporting, Nelson earned 4,039,498 votes - over 42,000 more votes than Gillum.
