Boeing jet crashed in Indonesia after key sensor replaced

"The Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has indicated that Lion Air flight 610 experienced erroneous input from one of its AOA (Angle of Attack) sensors", the warning said.

The Lion Air 737 Max 8 jetliner dove into the Java Sea on October 29 minutes after takeoff, nosing downward so suddenly that it may have hit speeds of 600 miles an hour before slamming into the water. "One of them should have reacted to the airspeed indicator malfunction in his display", said Nurcahyo, confirming that the jet was in the pilot's control, set to manual.

Boeing declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

A US aviation regulator plans to mandate that airlines follow an advisory issued by Boeing Co. on how pilots should handle false readings from a plane sensor that authorities say occurred on a 737 MAX jet that crashed off the Indonesian coast last week.

All 189 passengers and crew for the Boeing 737 are feared dead after the plane crashed shortly after takeoff as investigators and agencies from around the world continue its week-long search for the main wreckage and cockpit voice recorder which might solve the mystery.

The U.S. manufacturer has delivered 219 737 MAX jets to customers globally, according to Boeing's website, and it has 4,564 orders for jets that have yet to be delivered.

Lion Air's first two attempts to address the airspeed indicator problem didn't work and for the Boeing 737 MAX 8 plane's second to last flight, the angle of attack sensors were replaced, he said.

The committee is charged with finding the cause of the crash.

Boeing will caution its customers of "erroneous readings" from a flight-monitoring system can cause the planes to abruptly dive, Bloomberg quoted an anonymous source as saying.

Tjahjono said that the KNKT has asked the United States' National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Boeing to take the necessary measures to deal with issues with the speed indicator.

Ony Soerjo Wibowo assessed that a commercial aircraft could indeed experience technical failures despite having gone through periodic checks as the Lion Air crash suggests.

The confirmation of Flight 610's condition comes as divers continue to search for the aircraft's missing cockpit voice recorder (CVR), commonly known as a black box, which could help investigators piece together the plane's final moments before it crashed.

Problems with the plane's last flight before the crash, from Denpasar on Bali to Jakarta, were widely reported.

Indonesian officials said on Wednesday they would extend by three days the search for bodies.

Scores of body bags filled with remains have been collected and sent for DNA testing, but so far just 14 people have been identified.

"The plane was intact when it plunged to the sea, it did not explode in the air, and the aircraft engine was running when it touched the water at high RPM it's marked by the loss of all blades of the turbine", he said.
