The president has called Mueller's investigation a "witch-hunt" and criticized Sessions for recusing himself from overseeing Mueller's probe.

Chanting phrases like "No one is above the law" and "Hands off Robert Mueller", the crowd lined the sidewalk as passing cars honked in support.

Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. She said she was protesting the "forced" resignation of Sessions and Trump's dubious appointment of an acting attorney general.

People all over the country subscribed to an email list that would be activated if Trump appeared to be interfering with the investigation into his campaign.

That candidate, unlike Whitaker, would have to be confirmed by the Senate.

The rushed appointment "is unconstitutional". Whitaker very vocally believes otherwise.

In cities across the country Thursday - including in Eugene and Portland - protesters gathered over Sessions' ousting and concerns about what that could mean for Mueller's investigation.

"I do think these kind of gatherings of people who stand up, even at a moments notice, as kind of a liberty army, to say, 'We will protect the rule of law and justice, ' that's important to send that signal", Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton told the Indiana Daily Student. "He said it should be shut down".

Ethics officials at the Justice Department are likely to review his past work to see if he has any financial or personal conflicts.

Trump has continued pressing his view that Mueller leads a team staffed by Democrats operating under an illegal mandate.

Several Republicans expressed concern about Whitaker taking over the Russian Federation probe.

President Donald Trump listens to a question during a news conference in the East Room of the White House, Nov. 7, 2018, in Washington.

During a brief stint previous year as a conservative legal commentator on CNN, Whitaker often appeared as a Trump defender, saying he saw no evidence the president colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign or obstructed justice.

Although the probe was launched to investigate any "links/coordination" between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, Mueller is believed to be focusing now on whether Trump obstructed justice through acts including firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey.

They also sent a letter telling the Justice Department to preserve "all materials related to any investigations by the special counsel's office" and the "departure of Attorney General Sessions".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has walked back the vow he made past year that there would be "holy hell to pay" if President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

After recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, the staunchly conservative Sessions spent his time ramping up efforts to combat violent gangs, drug use and illegal immigration - all key components of Trump's law-and-order agenda.
