Two first-half strikes from Milan Pavkov, a 24-year-old scoring his first European goals in only his 11th appearance, were enough to beat the off-colour Reds.

Asked if Liverpool FC's performances had dropped in recent months, Klopp replied in his post-match news conference on Tuesday night: "In the game [yes], not in general".

"We knew [about the atmosphere]", he said. In the end you have to score goals in a game and if you think about how often we were in the box and around, that's what you have to do in a game but you have to make the last decision in the right way and we didn't.

Strong, powerful in the air and seemingly an able striker of the ball, Pavkov's repertoire was too wide-ranging for Liverpool to cope with as he inspired the win with two completely different types of goal.

"I think it made sense to make a few changes, a few we had to make and a few we wanted to".

The first real scare for Napoli came on 23 minutes.

Liverpool have suffered defeat in the Champions League and Carabao Cup while sustaining an impressive challenge to Manchester City's defence of the Premier League title.

After a frustrating opening 15 minutes, Liverpool should have been ahead when Daniel Sturridge found himself free at the back post following a risky pass across the box, but the striker could only blaze the ball over the bar from just six yards out.

"But I will have to sleep in the morning because we have an important game this weekend". Most telling was the stat that the trio made zero tackles between them.

Liverpool are second in their group behind Napoli although the sides have the same number of points.

"You don't forget about these results quickly", Robertson said. The boys are very disappointed, I'm very disappointed.

Liverpool's trip to the Parc des Princes on 28 November has assumed greater importance for both teams after this week's results.

Gomez put in a solid shift at right back and the reds looked much more comfortable in possession on the right flank after he was introduced, even if they failed to create anything of note going forward. We can't be letting teams get a start.

"We believe we can win every game, that's always been the case with us".

"We had the first big chance with Daniel (Sturridge), a very big one". This season we've found that a bit hard.
