Though no one won the grand prize outright on Friday, Mega Millions officials said there were 15 tickets sold with numbers that matched all five white balls but not the Mega Ball.

The jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

The game, which was created in 2002, has seen changes over the years that have reduced the chances of winning, meaning bigger and bigger jackpots.

Jared Lucas told NC lottery officials that he and his wife made a decision to stop at a convenience store after passing a lottery billboard with the latest Megan Millions jackpot.

The estimated cash option for the new jackpot - should a victor choose to take a one-time lump sum payment instead of annual payouts over 30 years - is about $905 million, according to Mega Millions officials.

The next drawing will be on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 11 p.m. ET.

The odds for winning on Tuesday are about one in 302 million - nearly the adult population of the United States.

Three tickets sold in North Carolina were among the 100 $10,000 winners nationwide in last week's drawing, lottery officials said. The winning numbers for the approximately $430 million pot will be drawn Saturday night.

Most winners opt for cash, which for Friday night's drawing would have been $565 million. The odds of winning the jackpot aren't good.

Mega Millions is available in 44 states, including Florida, and in the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some were worth up to $1 million. There are smaller prizes, from $2 up to $1 million, for matching some, but not all, numbers.
