In a wide-ranging speech delivered on Thursday night, US Vice President Mike Pence said Beijing was meddling in the vote to counter tough trade policies against China.

Pence was to deliver an address at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington, which is likely to increase tensions between the United States and China beyond trade disputes.

"To put it bluntly, President Trump's leadership is working, and China wants a different American president", he said.

"It is very ridiculous for the U.S. side to stigmatise its normal exchanges and cooperation with China as China interfering in its internal affairs and elections", Ms Hua said.

Pence asserts that China's actions surpass those of Russian Federation in trying to shape American opinion. Beijing, of course, has been open about its opposition to new tariffs imposed by Trump and has made no mystery about its strategy of letting USA farming communities and other industries understand that its economic retaliation would be targeted at Trump's political base.

While the vice president stressed the threats posed by China to American interests, he emphasised that the USA desires a productive relationship with Beijing.

-China provides money to US universities, think tanks and scholars with the understanding that they will avoid ideas that the Communist Party finds offensive, Pence said. "The global community already knows fully well who wantonly infringes upon others' sovereignty, interferes in others' internal affairs and undermines others' interests". Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, and Kamala Harris, D-California - does not probe a detail volunteered by Pence today - that a senior career intelligence official told him Russia's activities "pale in comparison" to China's efforts to interfere in American domestic affairs.

Pence also denounced Beijing's crackdown on minority Muslims in the Xinjiang region.

"Beijing has mobilized covert actors, front groups and propaganda outlets to shift Americans' perception of Chinese policies", he said.

No administration official has offered evidence that China is seeking or has sought to weaponize hacked, politically sensitive information, as Russian Federation did during the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Pence also accused China of "reckless harassment" after a near-miss involving a Chinese warship and the destroyer USS Decatur which was sailing within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea.

"Despite such reckless harassment, the United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever global law allows and our national interests demand", Pence said.

Such paid supplements by foreign governments are commonplace in USA newspapers, but Pence complained that the United States was not allowed to print similar advertisements in China's state-controlled press.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence sharply criticized what he said was China's theft of U.S. technology on Thursday, and he urged Google to immediately end development of its "Dragonfly" app that would make it easier to track someone's internet searches. "But be assured, we will not relent until our relationship with China is grounded in fairness, reciprocity, and respect for our sovereignty", he said.
