Trump praises Montana GOP congressman for body-slamming reporter

Gianforte pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and was sentenced to 40 hours of community service and 20 hours of anger-management, in addition to the $385 in court fees and fines.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised a US congressman who assaulted a reporter, making light of the attack. Trump added that he predicted the assault would actually help Gianforte's election bid previous year, according to The Hill.

Greg Gianforte (R-Montana) as "my kind of guy" for body slamming a reporter who was trying to ask him a question on the eve of a special election a year ago.

But as he left Washington to travel to the rally on Thursday, Mr Trump warned of "very severe" consequences for the apparent killing.

The next day, Mr Gianforte won a special election for Montana's US House seat.

Trump said he was afraid Gianforte would lose after the moment, but then recalled, "Wait a moment, I know Montana".

His remarks praising Mr Gianforte come amid an global furore over the apparent assassination of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who allegedly had his fingers cut off and was decapitated inside a Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago.

"And I said, oh, this is bad".

"People wonder whether or not there's a cause and effect -whether or not the president's rhetoric plants seeds of violence in his own supporters". Trump's comments mark the first time the president has openly and directly praised a violent act against a journalist on American soil.

Riyadh is suspected of murdering Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and United States permanent resident whose writings have been critical of powerful Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
