Tropical Storm Michael could hit Florida Gulf Coast as Category 2 hurricane

Michael's trek to Florida is affecting politics in the state.

National Hurricane Center warns Hurricane Michael could produce life-threatening conditions along the Gulf Coast; Adam Klotz reports from the Fox Extreme Weather Center. Michael is expected to become a hurricane later Monday.

A hurricane warning has now been issued by the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) for the Gulf Coast of Florida.

DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK -------- At 400 PM CDT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Michael was located near latitude 19.2 North, longitude 85.5 West. Michael is moving toward the north-northeast near 3 miles per hour (6 km/h). He warned that storm surge could affect areas of Florida not in the storm's direct path.

According to ABC News, the storm is around 120 miles east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and its maximum sustained wind speeds have reached up to 70 mph. The current forecast would bring Michael into the region as a moderate to strong tropical storm. He added that the effects of the storm could have similarities to Hurricane Hermine, which caused lengthy power outages in the Tallahassee area two years ago.

Michael was lashing western Cuba late Monday morning with heavy rains and strong winds, according to the hurricane center.

As the track stands right now, tropical storm force winds will be the main concern.
