There's still a long way to go before we can compare the "Meme Team" to the classic Showtime Lakers, but if James has anything to say about it, the Lakers will be heard from this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be opening the season on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers.

LeBron James made his debut on the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2018.

It was the first time James played within the competitive Western Conference, and called for patience as his new teammates learn to play together. "It takes some time to get that chemistry where you can just close your eyes and know exactly where guys are".

The 33-year-old signed a four-year, $154 million deal with the Lakers in July after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers. Portland won their home opener for an NBA-record 18th straight time and extended their streak of consecutive victories over the Lakers to 16 dating back to 2013.

With the Lakers up 6-2 after baskets by Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee and Brandon Ingram, James stole the ball from Portland forward Jake Layman and raced to the other end for a dunk.

While the points per game average might not rise for Ingram this season due to James commanding most of the shots in the Lakers offense, the biggest sense of growth and improvement for Ingram will show in his efficiency numbers as well as his shooting percentages.

"They were thunderous", Josh Hart said.

Three-time National Basketball Association champion James scored 26 points - the second most by a Lakers debutant - in his first regular season game since leaving hometown team the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in the summer.
