Cam Battley is a top executive at one of Canada's biggest marijuana companies, but he isn't sticking around to savor the country's historic pot legalization.

The commission didn't say if Tweed plans to make more products available to the territory in the near future. "We're not known as wild and insane".

Battley will attend an investor conference in Germany and then head to Australia, which legalized medical marijuana in 2016.

Its deliberate approach, which took more than two years of planning, allows provinces to shape their own laws within a federal framework, including setting the minimum age and deciding whether to distribute through state-run or private retail outlets.

But the government statistics agency expects the new cannabis industry to have at best a "minimal impact" on growth in Canada.

"They stayed up all night working to fulfil the orders and I'm very, very proud of them", he said of those working on the web sales.

The entry into force of the Cannabis Act makes Canada only the second nation after Uruguay to legalise the drug.

"Consequently, crossing the border or arriving at a US port of entry in violation of this law may result in denied admission, seizure, fines, and apprehension", said Customs.

In the USA, recreational cannabis has been legalised in eight states, while countries such as the Netherlands and Spain have decriminalised pot possession.

It might have a more immediate effect in countries like New Zealand, where the government has promised a legalization referendum by 2020, said John Walsh, of the advocacy group Washington Office on Latin America.

Reform advocates have been promoting marijuana legalization in Italy for years, without success.

While President Donald Trump has said he would likely support a congressional effort to ease the federal prohibition, his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, is a marijuana critic and legalization opponent.

"This is the genie out of the bottle", Walsh said. The US Customs and Border Protection held a briefing with journalists on Tuesday, noting that marijuana remains illegal under US federal law and those caught at the border with pot are subject to arrest and prosecution.

Most strains on the website are being sold for between $6.99 and $9.99 per gram, but there are also higher-end strains like the Acapulco Gold, which is selling for $56.99 for 3.5 grams. In tune, Canada has been preparing for the move and sending out millions of flyers to residents speaking of the new marijuana laws and raising awareness on its use.

From an educational standpoint, advocate Jo Vos, managing director of the information portal Leafly Canada, said B.C.'s liquor distribution branch had done a good job of hiring knowledgeable staff from the existing industry. Hundreds had formed queues around the block, and 46-year-old Ian Power was first in line at a store in the city of St. John's. "I'm going to save it forever".

The stores have a sterile look, like a modern clinic, with a security desk to check identification.

They fear the displays are aimed at luring teens - who can not legally buy vaping products until the age of 19 - into the smoking habit and argue vaping gear should be shielded from view like cigarettes have been since 2005.

"It's a product like many that are used today for intimate areas of the body, but it should be labelled as such ... obviously there's a mistake there that needs to be corrected, so we certainly will be following up with them to ensure that the right information is being given to consumers".
