Manchester United have become a laughing stock and even Lionel Messi would struggle in the current side, according to club legend Paul Scholes.

Paul Scholes believes he knows why Paul Pogba isn't performing at the standards he set while at Juventus and implied the French World Cup victor is unable to control games in the way a player of his calibre should.

The player's inconsistent form and poor relationship with manager Jose Mourinho did not help his case either, and many believed his Manchester United career would be over sooner rather than later.

"But it feels like every player who comes into the team struggles".

United are already seven points behind English Premier League front-runners Manchester City and Chelsea after eight games.

"I know he has qualities and has been a good player, but I never saw him as a United player", Scholes told ESPN.

It is understood that Allegri could be offered a three-year contract to succeed Jose Mourinho by United, with a budget of around €200million to spend on new players. We look at who has impressed so far this season and who will need to work harder if they want a chance to play for the first team. "The signing felt like it happened just to stop Man City signing him". But if he doesn't get 45, then it doesn't mean he's a worse player, just that things have leveled off.

"We never saw that at Juventus, but [Pogba] was a smaller fish there", he continued. "Pogba was part of a great team but he's come to United where he's got nobody to control him like he had at Juventus".

Manchester United now have five players on loan at clubs around Europe. It could be do-or-die time for the Portuguese tactician.
