German police seize man who took woman hostage in Cologne train station

She said: "We assume that a hostage has been taken, either at McDonald's or at a nearby pharmacy".

"We have indications that one man is holding one woman, but we haven't been able to really get close", Schulte said. "Police measures are continuing", Cologne police wrote on Twitter just after 3pm after commandos had stormed the shop.

German magazine Focus had earlier reported that several shots appeared to have been fired at Cologne's main train station.

Eyewitnesses said around 6:45 a.m. ET a man entered a pharmacy at Breslauer Platz, near the backside of the train station, and reportedly took one person hostage.

Around the time of the incident, a teenage girl was taken from the train station to the hospital with injuries, police spokesman Christoph Schulte said.

Police tweeted that the hostage was slightly injured and was now being treated. The hostage was also slightly injured and treated on the scene.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily.

Ambulances and heavily-armed police were lined up in wait behind the train station. He wouldn't confirm local media reports that the hostage-taker had first attacked the girl before taking the other woman hostage.
