Employers Must Recognise Their Role In Tackling Our Mental Health Crisis

This year, the theme of World Mental Health Day is "Young people and mental health in a changing world" - a vital concern given that approximately 1 in 5 adolescents experience mental and behavioural problems in any given year.

"Most of them indeed are, but much less so than we used to think".

"Most people with depression are not suicidal, but most suicidal people are depressed", she says, hence the importance of knowing the symptoms of depression.

The warning, as mild as it seems, must be taken very serious by parents and guardians who have the health of their children and wards at heart, while the day must be used to soberly reflect on the mental health status of our children.

Professor Helen Herrman, president of the World Psychiatric Association, said: "We've seen a rise in mental illness in young people when, with all the knowledge we have, we should be seeing a decrease".

"There remains significant under-investment in the mental health system".

That's why we're supporting Natasha Devon's campaign to have the Health and Safety at Work Act updated so that all employers have an obligation to provide mental health first aiders - regardless of whether workplaces are unionised or not - and independent of the size of the business.

In fact, work absence as a result of mental health issues costs the United Kingdom £26 billion per year.
