Smith also completed just 23 of his 39 passes with many of his incompletions being completely off target. Brees posed for pictures on the sideline with his wife, Brittany, and their four children.

Ted Ginn Jr. has been ruled out of Monday night's game with a knee injury, which could create more opportunity for New Orleans Saints rookie receiver Tre'Quan Smith or fourth-year pro Cameron Meredith. Shown on the video slicing tomatoes, Manning deadpanned that his time as the career yards passing leader have been "the greatest thousand days of my life".

Brees set the National Football League all-time completions record last month with number 6,301 to break Favre's career mark. "I just play because I love the game and I love to compete and I love being part of this organization".

Norman's night was perfectly summed up by a video shot by Richmond Times-Dispatch sports editor Michael Phillips.

In a pre-taped message, Manning said: "All your hard work and dedication has paid off. Congratulations and I'm proud of you".

Of course, the record shouldn't distract the Saints from the task at hand. The San Diego Chargers took the 6-foot Brees at the beginning of the second round of the 2001 draft, but allowed him to leave in free agency after a major throwing shoulder injury at the end of the 2005 season. He also shared a hug with his longtime coach, Sean Payton.

Brees, who turns 40 in January, sparked the Saints to a 2010 Super Bowl victory, taking Most Valuable Player honors in a 31-17 triumph over Manning's Indianapolis Colts. "It doesn't feel like it's been 13 years". He did, however, make his eighth career reception on his own deflected pass, and pushed across the line of scrimmage to add an extra yard to his career total. In the press box, the Superdome catering staff served "beefy mac", a meal of macaroni with ground beef that has always been one of Brees' traditional meals on the night before games.

After the Saints extended their lead to 13-3 on a drive that included numerous costly penalties on the Redskins, Alex Smith and Adrian Peterson once again began working to put points on the board.
