There are a lot of talks on championing good mental health, but one of the most powerful statements was from the American singer-songwriter, Lady Gaga.

A poll conducted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists found that 24 per cent of people diagnosed with a mental health condition reported waiting more than three months to see an NHS mental health specialist, and six per cent waited more than a year.

More importantly, no statistic can ever begin to capture the devastating and isolating impact on those people affected by mental health issues, and on their families and friends. Currently, too little attention is paid to the issue, as a result of which tens of thousands of people suffer in silence.

For such a long time I have campaigned for mental health, having had a relationship with anti-depressants since my early teenage years. Being educated about the matter is not only empowering, but it can also bring about empathy for others, help lessen the falsities associated with mental illness and help those suffering from any mental challenges seek the help they need. Back then I would have thought a World Mental Health Day was wonderful, and the fact that I'll be talking about it on the radio would have been overwhelming.

Anxiety and depression are the most common categories of mental illnesses. Organizations, ministers and representatives from more than 50 countries will continue to discuss the many issues surrounding mental health in the capital today.
