The 39-year-old Brees broke the record with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Quan Smith to give the Saints a 26-6 lead in the second quarter of Monday night's contest against the Washington Redskins.

Brees needed only 201 yards passing to eclipse Peyton Manning's all-time mark of 71,940. Brees removed his helmet and hugged his wife, Brittany, and four children on the sideline.

Brees was drafted by the Chargers in the second round of the 2001 National Football League draft and signed a deal with New Orleans in 2006.

It also took Brees fewer games than Manning to pass for 71,740 yards - Brees achieved the feat in 253 games compared to Manning's 266. Brees is roughly 5,000 yards ahead of the next active player on the all-time passing list - No. 4 Tom Brady at 67,077. Brees now has 1545 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

"Obviously, and I know Drew feels the same way, you never play for individual records of any sorts", Manning said in June (via the New Orleans Times-Picayune). He has 499 career touchdown passes. "I love you boys, I love you". Brees has passed for more than 59,000 yards and more than 400 TDs in 12-plus seasons for New Orleans, smashing every meaningful Saints passing record while helping long-frustrated franchise win its first Super Bowl in 2010 and go to the playoffs six times.

Anticipating that Brees might break the record against his team, Redskins Coach Jay Gruden told the Athletic's Tarik El-Bashir before the game, "It's a great accomplishment, man".
