Haley is married to Michael Haley, an officer in the South Carolina National Guard and has two children. "But I will tell you that I think it's time".

In response to the news, Ivanka Trump tweeted out kind words about Haley, saying: "Ambassador Haley has served America with dignity + distinction".

Trump said she would leave at the end of the year. Marco Rubio, who wanted to push the party toward a more multicultural future.

"I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person", she said when there was speculation she may have been the author of the NYT op-ed that scalded Trump. At this time, there's no word on who could replace Haley as United Nations ambassador, but her successor should be named within two to three weeks, according to the president.

John Bolton. The current national security advisor had the title of US ambassador to the United Nations once before.

Republican lawmakers swiftly praised Mrs Haley after the news broke.

If this was long-planned, it was apparently the best-kept secret in Trump's White House.

Sitting alongside Trump in the Oval Office Tuesday, Haley went on to praise the current administration's foreign policy, saying "the USA is respected".

Haley has pressed for a hawkish line on Iran, justified U.S. cuts to foreign assistance and earlier this year led the United States in bolting from the UN Human Rights Council, accusing it of bias against Washington and Israel. We passed the toughest sanctions against any country in a generation, pressuring North Korea toward denuclearization.

As governor, she developed a national reputation as a racial conciliator who led the charge to bring down the Confederate flag at the Statehouse and guided SC through one of its darkest moments, the massacre at a black church.

"Now the United States is respected".

But Haley made it clear in the meeting that she did not plan on challenging the president in 2020 according to reporters in the room.

Her departure is being seen as a blow for the White House just weeks before the USA midterm election.

Haley's decision surprised several senior White House aides, Chief of Staff John Kelly and Vice President Mike Pence.

Axios reporter Jonathan Swan broke the news Tuesday morning. She saw herself as a fighter.

She became known for being a hawk on Iran and its regional aggression, a strong advocate of Israel and, working together with Secretary General António Guterres, a force for cost-cutting.

Powell was with Haley in SC over the weekend, according to a photo posted to her Twitter feed.

She has also won plaudits from Israeli leaders for her strong defense of Israel at the United Nations, a body often considered highly critical of the Jewish state.

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is resigning, The Associated Press has learned.

On Monday, a watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, asked the State Department's inspector general to investigate the ethics of Haley accepting seven flights for herself and her husband on private planes owned by three SC businessmen. All three men are CEOs of private companies based in SC. The Senate overwhelmingly confirmed her to the post in January 2017, by a vote of 96-4.

Haley, in turn, thanked Trump and praised members of his family before mentioning her own family.
